How We Choose Our Wood: American Black Walnut, Iroko, and European Oak

At Elson, the wood comes first.

Before a single joint is cut or a leg is shaped, we spend time with the timber — understanding its grain, its weight, its character. The species we work with aren't chosen arbitrarily. Each one has qualities that make it right for furniture built to last a lifetime.

Here's how we think about the three woods we use in the Elson Lounger.

American Black Walnut

Walnut is the benchmark for premium furniture timber. Its deep chocolate-brown heartwood, fine grain, and natural lustre make it immediately recognisable — and it only improves with age, developing a rich patina over decades of use. It's a dense, stable hardwood that machines and finishes beautifully. If you want a piece that makes a statement and holds its value, walnut is the natural choice.

Best for: Interiors with warm tones, leather upholstery, or a mid-century aesthetic. Indoor use only.

Iroko

Iroko is an African hardwood with a reputation for exceptional durability. Its interlocked grain gives it a distinctive, slightly irregular figure — no two pieces look quite the same. It's highly resistant to moisture and movement, which makes it one of the most stable timbers we work with. Iroko has a warm golden-brown tone that deepens over time.

Best for: Those who want something with more visual texture and character. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

European Oak

Oak is the great British hardwood — used in furniture, flooring, and architecture for centuries. Our European Oak has a pronounced grain with occasional ray flecks that catch the light. It's strong, reliable, and ages gracefully. A more neutral tone than walnut or iroko, it works with a wider range of interiors.

Best for: Lighter, Scandinavian-influenced spaces or those who prefer a more understated look. Indoor and outdoor use.

Whichever timber you choose, every Elson piece is made to order in our workshop. If you'd like to discuss which wood is right for your space, get in touch — we're happy to help.
