Solid wood is one of the most durable materials you can furnish your home with. Unlike veneered or engineered alternatives, it can be refinished, repaired, and restored — meaning a well-made piece can genuinely last a lifetime.
But it does need a little attention. Here's what we recommend.
Keep it away from direct heat and sunlight
Wood is a natural material that responds to its environment. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will fade the finish and dry out the timber. Positioning near radiators or underfloor heating vents can cause the wood to crack or warp over time. A consistent room temperature and indirect light will keep your piece looking its best for longer.
Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth
For day-to-day maintenance, a soft dry or slightly damp cloth is all you need. Avoid abrasive cloths or chemical sprays — they can damage the finish. Wipe in the direction of the grain.
Use coasters and placemats
Heat and moisture are the two biggest threats to a wood finish. Always use coasters under drinks and placemats under hot dishes. If water is spilled, wipe it up promptly — don't let it sit.
Oil periodically
Depending on the finish applied to your piece, periodic oiling will help maintain the wood's natural lustre and protect it from drying out. We'll advise you on the specific finish used on your Elson piece and how often it should be treated — typically once or twice a year.
Deal with scratches early
Minor surface scratches can often be buffed out with a fine-grade wire wool and a little oil. Deeper marks may require light sanding and refinishing — something we're happy to advise on. The advantage of solid wood over veneer is that it can always be brought back.
